How to Wear - Day-Glo Brights

So often when I meet personal styling clients for the first time, they tell me about how much they love a certain colour but how they could never wear it as it doesn't suit them or that they're 'too old' to wear it. However, I'm a huge believer that you shouldn't rule out any colour entirely at any age, you just haven't found the right shade yet!

Clients seem to think that I'll list all the colours suit them and that they should throw out everything else in their wardrobe that isn't that exact shade... I don't! As a general rule of thumb, if you try an item on in a particular colour and it makes your skin glow and you feel happy in it, then it's a keeper!

For a lot of people, day-glo/acid/neon brights remind them of really loud and cheap and tacky outfits from the 80's and 90's but it's making a HUGE comeback and it would be a shame not to at least try and embrace a little neon yellow in your life! The good thing about neon yellow is that it is has many variations from subtle but bright neon yellows to acid lime.

If you have bags of confidence and want to rock a full-on neon outfit, use the ever fabulous Jennifer Lopez as your reference point and add a contrasting neon shade of heels. Julianne Hough also looks fabulous in a full length, acid bright Kaufmanfranco number.

Blair from my favourite fashion blog, Atlantic-Pacific shows how you can wear a neon lime green shade of dress and still look so classy without a hint of tacky. She tones her dress down by adding a gorgeous buttery tan soft leather jacket, a leopard print Valentino bag and some violet heels.

I love this similar Antonio Berardi dress with high neckline which ensures you won't be showing too much flesh and standing out for all the right reasons.

Speaking of awesome necklines, I love the twisted neckline of this fluorescent Aqua dress. It's such a stand-out shade which is bound to get you noticed...

For a slightly more casual option, this Whistles dress is perfect for wearing with flat sandals for a relaxed daytime look or platform heels and bright red lips for a dramatic night outfit!

For full on neon drama, (I mean - if you're going to do it, you might as well do it right, right?) look no further than Tibi... This skirt is definitely not for the faint-hearted. It just screams 'look how fabulous I look in my lime skirt".... ;)

If you're stuck for what the heck to wear with such a show-stopping skirt, I love how Blair (from Atlantic-Pacific... again!) adds a dramatic navy peplum top and some chunky beads to her Tibi skirt.

For a more budget friendly midi-skirt, ASOS has the perfect playful little number to tempt you into the trend...

Of course, I completely understand if a full, midi, neon green skirt is a step too far for you. Maybe break yourself into the trend with a neon top and some black skinny jeans instead - deal?

My sister bought this gorgeous silk vest from River Island last week. Of course, my favourite sister rule is what's hers is mine and what's mine is my own... :)

Equipment do thee best silk shirts and I just love the pocket detail on this one that's currently on sale on ASOS. Get in there quick to grab a bargain!

This Tibi peplum top is almost as delicious as the skirt that is goes with... perfect for wearing with leather leggings and a contrasting statement necklace and of course, some skyscraper heels!

A hint of neon is better than nothing and is a great place to start if you're not sure how you feel about the colour just yet and need a little more convincing. I used an amazing sparkle jacket by Pied a Terre with subtle lime lining and teamed it with a fab Biba clutch in a similar hue for the fashion shoot I styled for the latest issue of Business Women Scotland Magazine. The McQ line by Alexander McQueen always produce such amazing pieces every season that I instantly fall in love with. I love this (pale) neon leather skirt with lots of zip detail. It goes perfectly with the neon camouflage sweater, also by McQ! The sweater is just adorable! Absolutely have to have....

If all else fails and I can't convince you to try some neon clothing, however subtle, then at least have a go at trying some neon accessories. It gives a fashionable nod to the trend without having to make a major style commitment.

These strappy sandals will keep your tootsies the main focus of your outfit it you pair with black or neutral shades so let your feet do both the talkin' and the walkin'...

Or finish off a simple outfit with a power clutch - this is my favourite neon bag around just now by Pied a Terre. Simply luscious...

You are never too old or too young to try out a new style so why not give some neon pieces a try... it's really not as scary as you think!
